The University of Vermont’s Tech Hub will receive $23 million in grant money thanks to the latest round of funding from the federal government.

The funding comes from the United States Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs program.

The UVM Tech Hub has been working to develop gallium nitride-based semiconductors, and this latest round of funding will allow researchers to continue to produce the technology that is crucial to so many elements of modern technology, including cars, smartphones and other advanced manufacturing.

A total of $210 million in grants was given to six Tech Hubs across the country. The new awardees, including UVM, have not previously received federal Tech Hub implementation funds from Congress.

Vermont Sen. Peter Welch applauded the Biden-Harris administration’s investment in Vermont’s technology sector and said that the funding is a “testament to our innovative leadership, world-renowned research institutions, and our record of excellence in manufacturing.”

The Tech Hubs program was created by the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act.
