Employee in this job at Vermont Telephone assists the Director of Accounting & Director of Process Engineering, managing the daily financial activities and functions for the company including accounting, budget, credit, insurance, tax, and treasury. Ensures all financial operations are in compliance with governmental rules and regulations. Forecasts and manages a cash flow that meets the needs of the company. Acts as an advisor to management on regulations and other matters that may impact the financial activities of the company, engaging with outside consultants if applicable. Manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. Work is performed by applying knowledge of accounting including the use and management of automated accounting systems.

Essential Job Functions:   

1. Processes and journals accounting transactions, such as monitoring cash balances, reporting from billing system to accounting system, complete general ledger account reconciliations, and more.
2. Leads and directs accounting professional and support staff functions such as Cash Receipts, Accounts Receivable and/or Accounts Payable. Maintains and reconciles subsidiary and control accounts.
3. Manages various accounting functions including ledger maintenance, asset accounting, as well as associated analysis and reporting. Assists Director of Accounting and with preparation for annual tax filings and audit procedures, including 1099’s and interim and year-end audit requests.
4. Generates and processes monthly and quarterly reports for filings and payments, such as video contracts, PEG fees, Sales & Use Tax, Federal Taxes, Property Taxes, TRS, uncollectable accounts, etc.
5. Compliance with escheat process and unclaimed property.
6. Evaluates and makes improvements to accounting processes while ensuring that practices comply with organization accounting policies and applicable laws and regulations.
7. Maintains files of source documents and other information related to accounting activities.
8. Performs other related functions as assigned by management. *

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of Accounting and Auditing principles, practices and procedures
2. Knowledge of accounting software, reports and processes
3. Knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing programs
4. Knowledge of Federal and State filing returns
5. Knowledge of telecommunications industry and operations
6. Knowledge of customer service practices and techniques.
7. Knowledge of company policies, procedures, products, and services.
8. Superior skills in written and oral communication.
9. Ability to analyze financial data and reports
10. Ability to organize, prioritize, and handle complex accounting matters.

Education and Experience:

1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting is preferred.
2. At least three years of accounting experience is required.
3. Prior supervisory experience is helpful.
4. Proven communication, interpersonal, problem solving and critical thinking skills
5. Strong work and moral ethics.
