VITL is seeking a skilled technologist with a strong background in AWS technologies and expertise with the Linux operating system. The Linux SRE is responsible for building and maintaining distributed cloud solutions that support complex health data initiatives for the Vermont Health Information Exchange (HIE) and VITL. This position will support a team that is building data driven initiatives using Amazon AWS and open-source technologies. The Systems Engineer will also be responsible for building and maintaining systems in alignment with the security controls, governance processes, and compliance measures of VITL’s system security planning processes.

Principal Responsibilities:

Design, implement, and manage distributed cloud solutions
Deploy and manage open-source technologies including Linux, Docker, Kafka, Couchbase and Postgres
Deploy and manage AWS services such as S3, EC2, VPC, SQS and Lambda
Ensure the availability, performance, security, and scalability of services
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve issues in support of service level agreements (SLAs)
Provide off hours support for critical maintenance or problem resolution
Develop and maintain patch management routines that ensure alignment with risk management and limit operational impacts
Develop and maintain backup routines, ensure consistent backups, and test recovery procedures
Implement security and disaster recovery according to established standards policy and guidelines
Provide technical guidance and ensure best practices for cloud solutions
Collaborate across the technology team to share knowledge that informs optimal service delivery
Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps

Characteristics of an Ideal Candidate:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering or related field of study preferred, relevant industry experience may be substituted for degree requirements
3-5 years’ experience working in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
3-5 years’ experience working with the Linux operating system
Intermediate knowledge of virtualization and containerization technologies (Kubernetes, or Docker)
Intermediate knowledge of TCP/IP, VPC and general networking fundamentals is required
Proficiency scripting in languages such as Python and Bash
Capacity to leverage tools such as NewRelic, Datadog or CloudWatch
Capacity to leverage tools such as Kubernetes, Ansible, Git, Ansible, Terraform
Direct experience with Kafka, Couchbase, and Postgres is a plus
Experience with HL7, FHIR, Mirth Connect and Rhapsody is a plus
Strong aptitude to learn new languages, tools, and frameworks
Excellent technical, analytical and project management skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Location:

The VITL team is currently working remotely. The ideal candidate will live in Vermont and be available for in-person meetings. However, the Linux SRE position can be performed remotely by a candidate willing to travel as necessary. All VITL employees must live in and work from the United States; VITL’s preference is someone located in the Eastern or Central times zones.
