Director of Strategic Academic Communications

Ensure the efficient and timely operation of the Division of Strategic Communications at The University of Vermont and lead a team of 8-10 embedded communications and marketing professionals who support the work of schools and colleges. As operations leader, establish and maintain processes and procedures for the efficient and effective work of each manager and director to ensure the timely completion of projects, especially those that require involvement of multiple contributors across the division. Keep stakeholders informed about project status. Identify and anticipate roadblocks, finding solutions and escalating issues as needed.

 

As academic communications leader, align overall messaging with the UVM brand, elevate unit-originated stories to university platforms, and promote marketing and communications best practices. Work with each academic unit’s leader to document annual goals for communications and marketing and track progress towards those goals. Establish and monitor annual budgets. Recruit, onboard, evaluate, and retain staff members who serve as Office of Strategic Communications staff embedded in each academic unit.

 

Support the Deputy Chief Communications & Marketing Officer by serving as a senior leader within Strategic Communications. Represent Strategic Communications when the DCCMO is unavailable.

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

Bachelor’s degree plus 6-8 years of experience in communications, marketing and/or related field.

Experience working in a large, complex organization.

At least 5 years of supervisory experience of both people and projects.

Familiarity with digital communications, social media and best practices in marketing and communications.

Understanding of UVM’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Master’s degree preferred. Experience in higher education preferred.
