The Software Engineer will be responsible for coding, debugging, and integrating software that supports the integration, standardization, and secure delivery of complex health data for the Vermont Health Information Exchange (HIE) and VITL. This role will work as part of a team of back-end and front-end developers using cloud-based development methodologies. A firm understanding of web frameworks, APIs, databases, and multiple languages is required. The Software Engineer will also be responsible for building systems in alignment with the security controls, governance processes, and compliance measures of VITL’s system security planning processes.

Principal Responsibilities:

Code, test, debug, document, implement, integrate, and maintain software applications.
Collaborate with the development team and provide supplementary work that contributes to an overall product.
Work in a version-controlled environment and ensure software is released according to established protocols.
Participate in code reviews to ensure quality and performance across the product.
Work with high volume, complex data sets and relational, non-relational, and in-memory databases.
Create and consume APIs.
Collaborate across teams to understand system needs, design, and implement solutions.
Manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
Maintain comprehensive documentation of the solutions developed.

Characteristics of an Ideal Candidate:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering or related field of study preferred, relevant industry experience may be substituted for degree requirements.
1-3 years’ professional software development experience.
Proficiency with multiple programming languages (e.g. C#, Java, JavaScript, Python, Java, Node.js, Ruby, HTML, CSS)
Proficiency with source control, containerization, and CI/CD tools (e.g., Git, Docker, Kubernetes)
Experience working in cloud-based environments, experience with AWS technologies is a plus.
Experience working with relational, non-relational, and in-memory databases; specific experience with Postgres, Redshift and or Couchbase is a plus.
Knowledge of the SDLC and programming fundamentals – algorithms, data structures, design patterns, and paradigms.
Knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems.
Knowledge of networking fundamentals and troubleshooting skills.
Previous experience working healthcare systems or HL7 data standards is a plus.
Excellent technical, analytical and project management skills.
Ability to articulate technology strategy.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Location:

The VITL team is currently working remotely. The ideal candidate will live in Vermont and be available for in-person meetings. However, the Software Engineer position can be performed remotely by a candidate willing to travel as necessary. All VITL employees must live in and work from the United States; VITL’s preference is someone located in the Eastern or Central times zones.
