The University of Vermont is seeking to hire a Senior Systems Engineer.
Implement and support Microsoft and Apple technologies in both on-premises environment and cloud services, focusing on modern mobile device management (MDM), secure virtual desktop environments, and general end user computing (EUC) solutions. Design and support Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions and NIST 800-171 compliant secure enclave VDI environments. Collaborate with faculty and staff to determine needs and priorities and support deployment and administration of applications.
Primary responsibilities include: Administer Windows Server and Microsoft infrastructure services on multiple large-scale systems in a 24×7 production data center environment. Support on-premises Microsoft technologies such as Active Directory, Windows Server systems, and Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (formerly SCCM). Install, maintain, and modify Windows operating systems and components, and develop scripts (PowerShell) to maintain and enhance UVM systems.
Engineer and support Microsoft Intune and Jamf Pro MDM to manage endpoint devices, applications, security, and BYOD through Microsoft Entra and Apple School Manager cloud services. Collaborate to evaluate and deploy next generation systems for management of university client devices, operating systems, software, and BYOD.
Develop and support enhancements to EUC and secure environments. Provide technical support for UVM’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment, enhancing for academic needs as well as administrative access to sensitive data. Help manage UVM’s software delivery environments to ensure multiple software delivery methods meet campus needs, including integration of virtual applications and curating local downloadable installers for multiple operating systems and use cases.
Work with Systems and Information Security staff to ensure secure and reliable on-premises and cloud services environments. Maintain a proactive security posture when evaluating and implementing technologies, responding quickly to mitigate emerging threats and keeping systems and applications updated.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and five years of systems administration and scripting experience in a large-scale, complex Microsoft server environment. Four additional years of experience can substitute for the degree.
Expert knowledge of one or more client operating systems (Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS/iOS).
Expertise with Windows server environments and demonstrated ability to manage integrated services in a highly available environment.
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) expertise, ideally VMware Horizon.
Experience with scripting, including shell (sh/bash/zsh), PowerShell, or Python.
Experience with directory services (LDAP/AD/Entra) and thorough knowledge of client management platforms such as Microsoft Group Policy, Intune, and Jamf.
Configuration management, system and network debugging experience.
Effective troubleshooting skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience with Endpoint Detection and Response tools.
Experience administering Microsoft 365 services.
Previous history of running complex managed workstation environments successfully.
Experience with implementation and management of NSPM-33 requirements and security standards (such as NIST 800-171)
Experience with application virtualization technologies.
Experience working at an academic institution.
