Posting Summary

Responsible for management and systems support for multiple large-scale Linux computer systems, as well as security focused initiatives. As a member of the Systems Architecture & Administration department, install, maintain and modify operating-system-level software. Configure and install enterprise server equipment. Initiate and manage own projects, in collaboration with other systems administrators. Train technical and operational staff. Provide system tuning, troubleshooting, security, recovery from failure, capacity planning, business continuity and other related services. Document procedures. Develop software required for UVM systems. Support UVM’s enterprise server and storage environment, including hundreds of Linux servers, VMware ESXi, and petabytes of SAN storage (these systems support all aspects of server computing including research, learning, and administrative functions). As part of the broader team, contribute to operational security projects including vulnerability management system (Tenable), SIEM platform (Splunk), or IDS/IPS environment.

This position provides significant automation of services through scripting and program development. Report to the Infrastructure Team Lead within the Systems Architecture & Administration department. A change to any system-level software will likely affect thousands of users, so systematic attention to detail, careful planning, and judgment are critical.

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

Bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field and five years of systems administration experience in a large-scale complex server environment required. Four additional years of experience can substitute for the degree. Expertise with Linux required. A thorough knowledge of operating systems and network architecture and expertise with at least one systems programming language (C, Python, Perl, Rust, etc…) and software version control (git). Excellent troubleshooting skills. Effective communication skills and collaborative teamwork. Proven track record of deploying reliable services for large organizations. Experience with system and network debugging.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience with large-scale IDS/IPS systems. Expertise with large-scale filesystem and storage environments. Successful history of deploying common Internet-facing applications. Configuration management experience. Experience as a systems administrator at an academic institution. VMware vSphere expertise.
