Provide systems management and support for multiple large-scale Linux computer systems. Install, maintain, and modify operating system-level software. Develop software required for UVM systems. Configure and install enterprise server equipment. Provide system tuning, troubleshooting, security, recovery from failure, capacity planning, business continuity, documentation of procedures, and other related services. Support UVM’s enterprise server and storage environment, including hundreds of Linux servers, VMWare ESX, and 2PB of SAN storage, which support all aspects of server computing to include research, learning, and administrative functions. Operate University vulnerability management and scanning service and coordinate remediation for server environment. Oversee critical systems to include UVM’s Web Single sign-on and multi-factor systems, the Blackboard student learning environment, and wireless network authentication services systems. Maintain UVM’s identify management and security systems. Provide significant automation of services through scripting and program development. Train other technical and operational staff.

 

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience) 

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or technology related field and five years of systems administration and programming experience in a large-scale complex server environment required. Expertise with Linux/UNIX required. A thorough knowledge of operating systems and network architecture and expertise with at least one systems programming language (C, Python, Perl, Rust, etc…) and software version control. Excellent troubleshooting skills. Effective communication skills and collaborative teamwork. Proven track record of deploying reliable services for large organizations. Experience with system and network debugging. Experience running web single sign on solutions such as Shibboleth. Experience with vulnerability management tools such as Tenable.

 

Desirable Qualifications  

Expertise with large-scale filesystem and storage environments. Successful history of deploying common Internet facing applications. Configuration management experience. Experience as a systems administrator at an academic institution. Hardware, operating system, storage, and network virtualization experience. VMware vSphere expertise.
