The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer reports to the Director of Engineering. This role is responsible for the design, development, testing and validation of elevated-aesthetic, high-reliability mechanical and electro-mechanical furniture assemblies and systems.  You will primarily lead development of new products, but also support Sustaining Engineering and Mamava Manufacturing by adapting and improving existing designs, technology and manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute a Stage Gate product development process from concept through launch by designing complex mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies.  This includes early stage sketching, detailed 3D modeling, and 2D drawing creation.

  • Perform Engineering calculations, FEA, and risk analyses to ensure components and systems meet design criteria, reliability goals, and industry standards.

  • Support and bring to life design input from industrial and interior designers.

  • Perform detailed preliminary cost estimates for early stage projects; build detailed bills of materials; enter and maintain bill of materials in ERP/MRP system.

  • Fabricate (with hand and machine tools) and assemble prototypes for internal and external customer review and testing.

  • Design, build and execute physical and electrical tests per industry standards.

  • Lead design reviews to ensure manufacturability with external manufacturing partners.

  • Collaborate across the company with Sales, Marketing, Digital and Customer Service teams throughout the development process to ensure products meet design criteria, cost targets, and launch dates.

  • Generate content for owners manuals and Sales collateral including line art, assembly and troubleshooting steps, and 3D renderings.

  • Support Mamava Manufacturing, and external manufacturing partners, by implementing new and improved products, making efficiency improvements, and troubleshooting manufacturing and supply chain issues.

Qualifications:

  • B/S in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • 5 years of mechanical product design and development experience, with a proven track record of bringing products from concept to market.

  • Experience and familiarity with the design of electrical components and devices.

  • Expert with CAD 3D modeling software, preferably Autodesk Inventor.

  • Expert with ANSI and/or ISO drafting standards including ASME Y14.5 GD&T.

  • Expert with a CAD PLM system (preferably Autodesk Vault) and ERP/MRP systems (preferably Fishbowl) for BOM management.

  • Proficiency with fabrication, assembly and metrology tools.

  • Advanced knowledge of manufacturing processes (ie: sheet metal, molding, extrusions, millwork).

  • Ability to perform detail oriented work with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Experience with Google Office Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides).

  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with AC and DC electro-mechanical systems.  Familiarity or expertise in PCB layout and design, preferably in Eagle.  Familiarity with MicroPython devices.

  • Experience with CNC router programming, tool path layout and G-Code generation, preferably in AlphaCAM.
