Role Summary:
The Integration Engineering Electronics Position is part of an energetic Product Integration engineering team involved in translating customer navigation needs into 3D tracking solutions, for a broad range of medical applications. The Product Integration Engineering team supports the transition of OEM customer projects from start to finish, which includes the definition of navigation technical requirements, integration of NDI’s navigation sub-systems into OEM’s system architecture, prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, and production ramp-up.
The successful candidate will bring strong electronic engineering skills to a multi-disciplinary engineering team that already includes software, optical, electromagnetic, biomedical, and mechanical disciplines. They will work closely within the team, as well as with the sales and R&D departments, so effective technical communication skills are critical.
This role is for a results-oriented individual with a proven ability to understand complex problems, work collaboratively with team members and customers, and effectively communicate their vision. By utilizing critical thinking, listening to customers, and applying sound engineering judgment, this team member will play an important role in contributing to the future product direction(s).
Scope of Responsibilities:
- Educate OEM’s/customers on NDI’s EM platform capabilities, product configurations, tracking performance, system (electrical and API software) interfaces, integration best practices, and system limitations.
- Synthesize customer’s medical application needs into 3D tracking solutions; which includes, establishing 3D tracking requirements/specifications, recommendation of suitable navigation product configuration (PCBA, interconnections), and identifying/mitigating navigation technology integration risks (Electromagnetic Distortion).
- Provide electrical engineering support to specific OEM/customer during the integration of NDI’s EM tracking technology; from proof-of-concept, design, prototype, testing, troubleshooting/root cause analysis, to commercial launch.
- Support the development of (internal proof of concept) applications/demos.
Team Responsibilities:
The Product Integration Engineering team at Northern Digital, under guidance from the Integration Manager, will have the following responsibilities:
- Support sales and business development teams on early customer engagement activities.
- Synthesize customer’s medical application needs into 3D tracking solutions; which may involve assessing gaps between off-the-shelf product and customer needs, establishing 3D tracking requirements/specifications, support prototyping, and technical feasibility activities for specific OEM’s technical platform and medical workflows.
- Prepare and present product demonstrations and technical presentations.
- Develop proof of concept demos which showcase (EM and Optical) 3D navigational capabilities, value proposition, and NDI’s technical skills capabilities.
- Collaborate directly with Product Management, Technical Support, Sales, and R&D teams to recommend and evaluate new features for the next-generation 3D tracking product lines, based on market trends and technology evolution.
Education and Professional Qualifications:
- Must have a post-secondary degree or diploma in (electrical or mechatronics) engineering.
- Must have 3-5 years of electrical engineering experience in product design & development of medical devices or consumer products.
Desired Characteristics/Additional Assets:
- Must have prior experience working from (customer) product requirements and recommend electrical OTS (off-the-shelf) solutions, including system interconnections/interfaces.
- Must be able to interpret system architecture diagrams, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and (analogue / digital) signal test reports. Familiarity with Altium Designer is a bonus.
- Must have the ability to debug and troubleshoot electrical systems (incl. PCBA functional test, signal integrity, electromagnetic compatibility), using oscilloscopes, probes, logic analyzers, etc.
- Must have hands-on prototyping experience, incl. Soldering, board rework such as fly-wires and cutting traces, cable assembly.
- Must have proven ability to break down complex technical problems into fundamental (technology) blocks and utilize a systems approach to problem solving/design of experiments.
- Must have great presentation skills, with an ability to drive complex technical discussions and converge to technical solutions.
- Must be a self-starter, and demonstrate autonomy, with a relentless desire to succeed.
- Familiar with Application Programming Interfaces, C# and C++ programming languages.
- Familiar with embedded software concepts using FPGA, DSP, Microcontrollers, and Microprocessors.
- Familiar with product safety compliance certification methods (e.g. IEC 60601-1).
