As a member of the central Systems Architecture & Administration department, the Microsoft Systems Administrator position focuses on implementation and support of Microsoft technologies in both our on-premises environment and our hybrid Microsoft 365 cloud services. Primary responsibilities include:
Administer and support Microsoft Office 365 environment, including services such as Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint online. Support our hybrid identity synchronization and licensing requirements. Work with customers to encourage adoption and effective use of these services.
Consult with Senior Administrator staff regarding architecture and implementation of systems and services. Use automation whenever possible to manage and monitor these services, ensuring consistent configuration across services and thousands of users. Assist with implementation of third-party integrations.
Perform Windows Server administration on multiple large-scale systems in a 24×7 production data center environment. Support on-premises Microsoft technologies such as Active Directory, Exchange, and Windows-based file services. Develop scripts (PowerShell) to maintain and enhance UVM systems.
Work closely with Senior Administrator staff to help ensure both on-premises and cloud services environments remain secure and reliable for the University community and maintain a proactive security posture.

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Bachelor’s degree in technology related field, or equivalent experience.
Expertise with Microsoft operating systems, including Windows Server editions.
Experience administering Office 365 services and configuration.
Excellent customer service experience.
Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
Ability to maintain focus and professionalism under pressure.

Desirable Qualifications
Experience with Windows scripting and automation tools, ideally PowerShell.
VMware vSphere expertise.
Knowledge of Microsoft Azure services.
Experience with Active Directory and Group Policy.
Excellent troubleshooting skills, including system and network debugging experience.
Expertise with Exchange, SharePoint, traditional file and print services, or related technologies.
Experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
Experience working at an academic institution.

Occasional evening/weekend hours required
Special Conditions Bargaining unit position, External candidates must complete a 4-month probationary period, A probationary period may be required for current UVM employees, This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy
